Nominations are open for the Sunderland Marine Young Fisher of the Year Award 2025

Sunderland Marine, Young Fish Aotearoa NZ and the New Zealand Federation of Commercial Fishermen (Federation) are delighted to announce that nominations are now open for the second-annual Sunderland Marine Young Fisher of the Year Award.

This award celebrates young fishers under the age of 35 who have demonstrated skill and commitment and have a determination to further their careers within the fishing industry. Winners receive $5,000 from Sunderland Marine to advance their career in the fishing industry.

In 2024, the inaugural winner was third-generation Warkworth fisher Logan Murman, who was nominated for his range of fishing experiences in fisheries across the North and South Island, openness to innovation and resounding positive feedback from fellow members of the Leigh fishing community.

For Murman the $5,000 award was essential to recover from the unfortunate loss of his vessel, FV Unity.

“It was a pretty hard time last year, with a lot of outgoings and a lot of struggle, and the Award was helpful financial support.”

Nicki Peacey, representing Sunderland Marine, says, “Sunderland Marine are proud to support this award for the second year – we want to encourage young people to progress in our exceptional industry. We are excited to see a number of successful young fishers recognised for their hard work and commitment.”

The 2025 award will be presented at the Federation’s annual conference, held in Christchurch on 29 May, and the trophy will be passed on for the next year. Young Fish co-founder Ben Pierce says he’s pleased the award is returning for its second year and hopes it will become a long-standing award for decades to come.

“The reception for Logan was electric last year! I can't wait to see another winner awarded and feel that appreciation from the industry.”

Federation President Doung Saunders-Loder says awards like this are important to show support for newer members in the industry.

“There are many young fishers throughout New Zealand, and it is our role is to identify them and to support their needs as they progress through their careers. Vessel owners, skippers and crew all under 35 need to be embraced and recognised for their efforts. The Young Fisher of the Year Award serves to identify and promote these young fishers well and the Federation supports that unconditionally.”
